Port Gibson -The town "too beautiful to burn"

Port Gibson is a unique southern town filled with numerous historic and architecturally significant structures.  There are seven churches along Church Street, five of them of historic significance.  One of Mississippi's earliest synagogues also graces this graceful, tree-lined street.  Port Gibson contains three National Historic Districts and nearly two dozen separately registered National Historic Register properties.  As the site of the opening salvos of U.S. Grant's renowned Vicksburg Campaign in 1863, Port Gibson, by rights, should never have survived.  Local legend has it that as Grant passed down what was then already know as Church Street, he declared the city "too beautiful to burn". As a result, many buildings that bore mute witness to that deadly conflict still stand today to charm and edify new generations.  Images of this unique historic treasure can be found on the Port Gibson page.

 The Fight!

After 20 years of equivocating, the Mississippi Department of Transportation has declared that the newly expanded US Highway 61 will be routed down Church Street in Port Gibson.  This project will provide a four-lane corridor connecting Interstate 20 at Vicksburg, MS with Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge, LA.  Port Gibson is the last segment to be completed.  If MDOT is successful in this plan all of the historic and natural beauty of Church Street will be threatened.  For details of the FIGHT click HERE!
